A letter to expose the truth about religious cults

According to a letter from John Gasparro Jr, a wrtier and journalist, to Poughkeepsie Journal, there are many “cult religions” in the world is an understatement. By their very nature, cults are more of a destructive force than a unifying force in society. As a freelance writer/journalist, he said that he once was a “victim” of this destructive force himself. The following is the letter.

A&E has taken the bold move to tackle a subject that has long been misunderstood and ignored: Cults.

The first season of "Scientology - The Aftermath" by Leah Remini had very high ratings in 2016 and is preparing for a second run. Remini, the actress who starred in the television series "King of Queens," is coming forth as a former member of more than 30 years in Scientology, to narrate the show. She claims that the “cult religion ” — as she calls it — has destroyed many lives and families and bilked millions of dollars from vulnerable people looking for a “safe haven” in this troubled world.

To say that there are many “cult religions” in the world is an understatement. By their very nature, cults are more of a destructive force than a unifying force in society. As a freelance writer/journalist, I have to admit that I once was a “victim” of this destructive force myself. In my searching for religious (spiritual) truth, and having studied and been baptized into five different “religions” in my life course — the last being Jehovah’s witnesses — I discovered the hypnotizing effect cults have on people who are searching for truth and meaning in their lives.

A basic, successful training principle used by the Marine Corps in indoctrinating a young man into the ranks of an elite warrior group, is to strip away all the old familiar thinking, and instill in them the "corps" code of conduct. Unfortunately, cultist religious organizations use this same principle in their recruiting new members into their “societies.”

I believe it was the philosopher Plato who said: “…keep the masses ignorant and you control them. Educate them, and they control you….”

    John Gasparro Jr
